The Beginnings
M H Thomas & Gilgandra Real Estate traces its roots back to Moses Thomas, who arrived in Gilgandra in the early 1900s after an arduous journey from Victoria. His son, Martin Hamilton “Mick” Thomas, was born in 1920 and grew up on a Bearbong farm, where hard work was a way of life. Determined to build a future, Mick earned his wool-classing licence and spent years working in shearing sheds before opening a stock and station agency in Gilgandra in 1948.
His business quickly became a vital hub for local farmers, helping them trade stock and connect with the wider agricultural market. In the late 1950s, he expanded into livestock sales, forming key partnerships that led to the establishment of CPS Thomas Ballhausen & Irvine. A respected leader, Mick also served as Gilgandra Shire president.
Establishing
In 1949, Mick Thomas married local woman Gladys Hickman, and together they built both a family and a business. Their three sons - Geoffrey, Gregory, and Wesley - grew up to become directors of M H Thomas, continuing its legacy in the community. For decades, the business operated from various locations along Miller Street until 1997, when it acquired RS Pizzey Real Estate and secured a permanent home at 31 Miller Street. With this acquisition came the talented Helen Oates, who joined forces with Alison and Jenny Thomas to expand the company’s services into property management. This new direction strengthened M H Thomas’s reputation, fostering lasting relationships with landlords, tenants, and tradesmen. Today, M H Thomas & Gilgandra Real Estate remains a trusted name in Gilgandra, built on decades of dedication, expertise, and community connection.
Present
In 2016, M H Thomas merged with Gilgandra Real Estate, forming MH Thomas and Gilgandra Real Estate - now a leading agency in the Gilgandra region. Under the leadership of Bryce Thomas as the licensee in charge, the team, including Hayden Whiteman, Alison Thomas, and Cheryl Batten, continues to provide expert service in residential, commercial, and lifestyle property transactions. With a strong property management division, the agency also oversees a diverse portfolio of investment properties.
